What is your third place?

At a time when our nation is facing an epidemic of loneliness, when communities are suffering from loss of trust, low levels of engagement, despair, and political polarization, what if the answer to many of our problems lies in a simple idea? What if we just need to pay attention to the places where we find ourselves?

Outgoing Surgeon General Vivek Murthy says that America is experiencing a loneliness crisis. Here & Now continues our look at loneliness by focusing on another way people can stave off loneliness: third places.

A third place is a spot that is not your home or your workplace where you can still have vital social connections and interactions.

We hear from people who found friendship at a third-space organization called The Jar in Boston.

Host Scott Tong speaks to Vox journalist Allie Volpe — who has reported on third places — and Viterbo University ethics professor Rick Kyte, who has researched third places extensively, authoring the book "Finding Your Third Place: Building Happier Communities (and Making Great Friends Along the Way)."

“Richard Kyte's insight into the vital human experience of connection and friendship is both scholarly and inspiring. The next time I visit my favorite coffee shop, I'm leaving my laptop at home. It's time to look outward and engage more fully with others in our third places.”
